Nós comemoramos o Dia dos Namorados em 12 de junho, só que grande parte do mundo usa o dia 14 de fevereiro para trocar declarações de amor, cartões e doçuras. O Valentine’s Day, ou Dia de São Valentim, é comemorado nos Estados Unidos, Inglaterra, Alemanha, México, Itália, Japão e Portugal.
Mas você já se perguntou como surgiu o Valentine’s Day? E por que comemorar o dia de um santo como dia dos namorados?
Temos várias versões da história: a começar por dois mártires de nome Valentim. Um: São Valentim, o mártir e o outro Valentim de Terni. Continue lendo que vou contar um pouquinho dessas histórias para vocês.
São Valentim, o mártir
Nessa história voltamos muitos séculos atrás, mais precisamente ao século III, tempo que o império romano comandava Roma. O imperador Marco Aurélio Valério Cláudio ou simplesmente Cláudio II, estava convencido que os soldados solteiros eram mais motivados para o cumprimento do dever cívico de proteger Roma do que soldados casados, e assim, proibiu o casamento para militares.

Apesar do decreto, um sacerdote de nome Valentim continuou celebrando os casamentos desses militares. Entretanto ele foi descoberto, capturado e interrogado pelo imperador Cláudio II. O sacerdote era um homem muito sábio, e por isso, em vez de condená-lo à morte, Cláudio II o enviou para uma prisão domiciliar na residência do prefeito Austério, onde todos eram pagãos.
Ao chegar na residência, o sacerdote conheceu a filha do prefeito que era cega. Sentiu um grande amor por ela e rezou diariamente pela volta da visão da moça.
Após o milagre acontecer e a moça voltar a enxergar, toda família se converteu ao cristianismo.
Claudio II não era cristão, e a conversão da família fez com que a pena do sacerdote fosse a morte. Enquanto Valentim aguardava sua execução, muitas pessoas lhe jogavam flores e bilhetes, dizendo que ainda acreditavam no amor. No dia 14 de fevereiro de 286, Valentim foi levado para a Via Flamínia e foi executado.
Dizem que antes de seguir para a execução, ele escreveu um bilhete para a filha do prefeito, assinando como “seu Valentim”. Daí a tradição de enviar cartões para pessoas queridas nesta mesma data.
São Valentim de Terni
Nossa segunda história sobre São Valentim vem da consagração de um bispo de nome Valentim, na cidade italiana de Terni, em 197. O bispo era um grande fã de jardinagem e dizem que quando não estava na igreja prestando algum trabalho religioso, era visto cuidando das rosas do jardim.
Sempre ao cair da tarde, Valentim abria os portões para que crianças entrassem no jardim. Na hora de irem embora, ele entregava flores cultivadas e abençoadas por ele para que as crianças dessem às suas mães. A fim de que fosse alimentado o amor e o respeito aos pais.
No entanto, a fama de santo dos namorados veio de uma ocasião especial…
Um belo dia, ao ver um casal de namorados discutindo, o bispo entregou uma flor para eles, fazendo com que acabassem com a discussão no mesmo momento. Algum tempo depois, o bispo Valentim foi chamado para celebrar o casamento do mesmo casal e a história de reconciliação ficou conhecida por todos os habitantes da cidade.
“As rosas são lindas, perfumadas, delicadas, mas tem espinhos. E elas não vivem sem espinhos. Assim também são as diferenças entre o casal. É preciso conhece-las, respeita-las e trata-las com delicadeza para que nenhum dos cônjuges seja ferido. Agindo assim, serão felizes e as brigas desaparecerão.”
Algumas histórias também falam sobre seus dons de cura e viagens pelas terras italianas para atender doentes. Outra história diz que teria sido ele o responsável pela conversão do filósofo Crato e de seus seguidores.
A exposição e fama rendeu ao Bispo uma série de acusações e assim ele foi condenado e executado no dia 14 de fevereiro de 273. Três seguidores recém-convertidos de Crato resgataram seu corpo e levaram-no para Terni, onde hoje é possível encontrar a seguinte inscrição: São Valentim, patrono do amor. A Igreja deixou de comemorar oficialmente a data em 1969, mas os fiéis ainda acreditam muito no poder do santo em restaurar o amor.

A data traz um dia cheio de amor, cumplicidade e companheirismo e não só para namorados. A família e os amigos também são contemplados com mensagens de carinho e afeto. Veja algumas tradições:

Inglaterra – Presentes e doces para os filhos.
Dinamarca – Trocas de flores prensadas.
